Volleyball: Raiders Survive Mustang Scare

The Raiders needed five games to win their home opener, 3-2, over Morningside University JV on Wednesday at the Raider Fieldhouse.

The Mustangs took the opening set, 25-15, followed by the Raiders taking the second set, 28-26. CCC moved ahead with a 25-18 triumph in the third game before Morningside evened the match with a 25-21 victory in the fourth game. The Raiders looked like they might run away in the decisive fifth set, but the Mustangs refused to give up and came close to the upset. But CCC had just enough in a 17-15 win to take the match.

"I'm proud of our effort," said CCC head coach Mary Young. "We dug ourselves a hole, but we got ourselves out. We made it a little more interesting than it needed to be. We put ourselves in a position to win and we just didn't finish right away. We need to be better about that."

Ashley Brown and Katee Korte led the Raiders in kills with 15 and 10, respectively. Kamryn Chohon recorded 44 assists while Jill Kelly topped CCC in digs with 15.

The 2-1 Raiders will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at the Northeast Community College Tournament in Norfolk. On Friday, CCC will meet Barton (Kan.) Community College at 2 p.m. and North Iowa Area Community College at 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Raiders take on Kirkwood Community College at 11 a.m. and Allen County (Kan.) Community College at 1 p.m.
