Volleyball: RKP Invitational Recap

The Central Community College volleyball team split a pair of matches on Saturday at the RKP Invitational hosted by Southeast Community College. A recap of each match is below. The Raiders will host their home opener on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. match against Morningside University JV.

Match 1 vs. Colby (Kan.) Community College

The Raiders and the Trojans went five games before Colby pulled out the 3-2 victory. The match opened with an intense 30-28 win by the Raiders followed by a pair of Trojans victories, 25-18 and 25-19. Central set up a fifth game with a 25-19 win in the fourth set, followed by Colby taking the match, 15-7.

Ashley Brown led the Raiders in kills with 17 while Kamryn Chohon tallied 45 assists. Brown and Chohon made 13 digs apiece while Jill Kelly totaled a dozen digs.

"Our first match showed a lot of unforced errors, which is characteristic for a first match," said CCC head coach Mary Young. "But we fought hard to force the fifth set despite some of our struggles."

Match 2 vs. Cloud County (Kan.) Community College

The Raiders shut out the Thunderbirds, 3-0. The final scores read 30-28, 25-23 and 25-22.

Once again, Brown topped the Raiders in kills with 17 while Kennedi Branigan added 13. Chohon recorded 38 assists and 15 digs while Brown and Josie Richards respectively recorded 12 and 11 digs.

"I was really proud of how our team bounced back in the against Cloud County," said Young. "We played with a lot of energy and focus. Our serving and passing was much stronger and it fueled every aspect of our game. I am excited for the growth we will see as the season progresses."
