The Central Community College Volleyball team won its first two matches of the Johnson County Community College Kickoff, before surrendering two on the second day of competition. A brief recap of each match follows. CCC will be back at home on Wednesday, Aug. 31, to open Region IX play against McCook Community College at 7:00 p.m.
Match 1: vs. Ottawa JV
The Braves took the opening set, 27-25, before the Raiders took command in the final three sets, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-22, for the 3-1 victory.
Freshman Maeghan Pieper logged 15 kills, while Amber Anderson and Keshia Ellwanger each added nine apiece. Riley Dorn tallied a season-high 45 assists and Sydney Yong chipped in 21 digs.
Match 2: vs. Cowley County CC
Just like the first match, the Raiders saw the opposition take the first set before taking the final three. 12th ranked Cowley County took the first set, 25-23, before CCC took set two, 26-24. Then the Raiders made it look easy in the final two sets, 25-14 and 25-13, respectively.
Sophomore hitter Emma Coenen recorded a dozen kills, while Chainey Tompkin and Amber Anderson each added 10. Riley Dorn led the assist column with 38, while Sydney Yong was tops in digs with 21.
Match 3: vs. Lincoln Land CC
The Raiders and the Loggers went the full five sets before Lincoln Land CC emerged as the winner over CCC, 3-2. The teams swapped victories in the first two sets with the Loggers winning the first, 25-23, followed by the Raiders winning, 25-18. CCC took the third set, 25-21, before Lincoln Land battled hard to take the fourth set, 26-24. The Loggers took the fifth and decisive set, 15-10.
Keshia Ellwanger led the way in kills with 15, while Emma Coenen and Maeghan Pieper contributed 11 and 10, respectively. Riley Dorn logged a season-high 47 assists, with Sydney Yong recording 17 digs.
Match 4: vs. Johnson County CC
The hometown Cavaliers shutout the Raiders in CCC's final match, 3-0. The final scores read 25-20, 25-18 and 25-20.
Chainey Tompkins topped the Raiders in kills with a dozen, Riley Dorn totaled 35 assists and Sydney Yong finished with 15 digs. On the other side, the Cavaliers were led by Bree Schmidt with 12 kills, Stevie Sherard with 24 assists and Schmidt and Paige Corcoran each logged 21 assists.
