Women’s Basketball: CCC Defeats York JV/Hesston

The Central Community College posted victories over York University JV and Hesston College on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. A recap of games is below. With the wins, the Raiders are 4-2 on the season and will be back in action on Tuesday at home against Hastings College JV. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Raider Fieldhouse.

Game 1: CCC 74  York JV 61

The Raiders held the Panthers to 18 first-half points and went on to hold a 35-18 halftime advantage. The Panthers outscored CCC in the third period, 25-15, and pulled to within seven points, 50-43, at the end of the quarter. The Raiders responded with a 14-6 run to open the fourth period and went on to post the 74-61 victory.

"I thought we came out strong in the first quarter and pushed the pace to get some easy buckets," said CCC head coach Kasi Stoltz. "We turned it over too much, but it helps when we got 25 offensive rebounds and got to the line 34 times. We just need to be a bit more efficient with our shots and free throws."

Nikie Nelson led the Raiders in scoring with 21 points while Madison Jelinek logged a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Amy Mitchell finished with 13 points.

Game 2: CCC 65  Hesston College 59

The Raiders saved their best for last in a six-point win over the Larks. The game was close for the first three quarters as CCC held a 19-18 lead over Hesston at the end of the first period before the Larks took a 32-27 halftime lead. Hesston's five-point advantage held through the third as both teams tallied 14 points apiece for a 46-41 score. CCC took regained the lead at the 5:26 mark of the fourth period by outscoring Hesston 16-10 to take a 57-56 edge. The Raiders held the Larks to three points the rest of the way en route to a 65-59 win.

Four CCC players scored in double figures with Nelson leading the way with 16 points. Mitchell scored 13 points while Jelinek and Makenna Pelster each scored 11 points.

"I am real proud of the team effort," said Stoltz. "Both teams struggled to score at times, but I thought our defense was good throughout and limiting our turnovers was key. We gave up some buckets in transition when we couldn't score. In the third and fourth quarters, we really found our rhythm and got some big buckets from Amy Mitchell and Nikie Nelson."
