Men’s Soccer: CCC Tops Trinidad In OT

Peterson Costa (pictured) kicked the game-winning goal in the 99th minute to give the Raiders a 4-3 overtime victory against Trinidad State Junior College at Raider Soccer Field on Friday. Costa scored three goals on the day, with Marcus Horwood assisting on all three.

Costa's first goal came ten minutes into the contest, which put the Raiders up 1-0. The Trojans answered back in the 17th minute when Jahleel Cunningham found the back of the net off the assist of Jonathan Ortiz to make it even at 1-1. The Costa-Horwood duo scored one minute later and CCC was up 2-1. The scoring column remained dormant for the remainder of the first half and the Raiders took the 2-1 lead into halftime.

Horwood scored the first goal of the second half when he logged an unassisted goal in the 68th minute to give CCC a commanding 3-1 advantage. However, Trinidad cut the lead to 3-2 in the 77th minute when Ronaldo Watson teamed up with Christopher Badibeng on a goal. One minute later, the Trojans tied the game at 3-3 as Badibeng scored a goal with Watson on the assist. Neither team was able to break the tie in regulation and the game went to overtime.

Nine minutes into the extra session, Costa scored the game-winner and CCC escaped with the 4-3 win.

CCC goalie Ruben Gonzalez finished with 13 saves, while Trinidad netminder Eric Estrada totaled six saves on the day.

"This game had a lot of ups and downs for us," said CCC head coach Hawken Hanna. "We took a 3-1 lead and got a little too relaxed and let them back into it. I'm proud of the guys for stealing the momentum back and putting something together to win."

The win gives the Raiders a 5-2 mark on the 2018 season.
