Men’s Soccer: Raiders Fall to Reivers

The Central Community College men's soccer team lost to Iowa Western Community College, 3-1, at home on Wednesday. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Council Bluffs on Tuesday, but inclement weather forced a postponement and a change of venue.

IWCC scored the only goal of the first half When Quinton Kipara found the back of the net on an unassisted goal in the 12th minute. Iowa Western led 1-0 at the half.

An unassisted IWCC goal commenced the second half scoring when Mateo Mendez scored in the 51st minute for a 2-0 advantage. Three minutes later, the Reivers' Diego Flores scored a goal off the assist of Diego Mendez and the lead increased to 3-0. CCC avoided the shutout in the 69th minute when Nathan Kutalu scored an unassisted goal to cut the Iowa Western lead to 3-1. The Reivers were able to run out the clock for the win.

CCC goalie Ruben Gonzales chalked up nine saves, while IWCC netminder Daniel Bermingham logged a pair of saves.

"The guys played hard, stayed organized, and unified in game against one of the better teams in the country," said CCC head coach Hawken Hanna, who also credited midfielder Tychique Kutalu with a strong defensive performance. "We gave up a few goals on little mistakes that can be fixed and missed on a few opportunities at the end of the game to get back into it. Overall, it was a great learning experience for the team and will definitely help us be more prepared to meet the challenge at hand in our Region games."

The loss gives the Raiders a 1-1 mark on the 2018 season.

Up next, CCC will host Doane JV on Thursday afternoon. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
