Men’s Soccer: Raiders Wound Warriors

The Central Community College men's soccer team scored a convincing 5-1 victory over Midland University JV in Fremont on Thursday. The victory is the first for CCC's new head coach Hawken Hanna.

Luis Tovar logged the first goal 15 minutes into the contest off the assist of Nathan Kutalu. Twelve minutes later, Kutalu recorded his first goal of the season, which was unassisted. Marcus Horwood added another CCC goal in the 34th minute on a penalty kick. The Raiders led 3-0 at the half.

Horwood recorded another goal 13 minutes into the second half with Peterson Costa assisting. The Warriors scored their only goal of the contest in the 85th minute. With just a few minutes remaining, the Raiders' final goal came on a very unusual play. CCC goalie Ruben Gonzalez punted the ball and after two bounces, midfielder Alejandro Ramirez found the back of the net for the score. According to Hanna, it is a rarity for a goalie to get an assist, but Gonzalez got it. Ramirez' goal was the final touch on the 5-1 victory.

Gonzalez finished with five saves as netminder.

"We had a strong showing in our first match of the year," said Hanna. "From the minute we started warming up, you could tell that they were ready to go. We still have a lot of work to do to achieve our goals as a team, but this was a good start."

Up next, the Raiders will host their annual alumni game at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at Raider Soccer Field. CCC will return to regular season play on Tuesday with a road venture to Iowa Western Community College. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
