The Raiders Clear Out the Storm

The Central Community College men's basketball team closed out the regular season with a fine defensive performance in a 104-79 victory over Southeast Community College. The Raiders outrebounded the Storm, 50-33, and for nearly a seven-minute stretch in the second half, held SECC to a single three-point bucket.

"We really played good basketball today," said CCC head coach Jerry Drymon. "We delivered out best performance on the boards and having six guys in double figures gave great balance."

The Raiders opened the game on an 8-2 run, which was quickly matched by the Storm. SECC was able to pull to within one point on multiple occasions in the first half, with the final one coming at the 5:45 mark on a Bobby Parker jumper to make the score 30-29. CCC then rattled off a 12-4 run for a nine-point lead, its biggest of the first half. The Storm cut the lead down to two before settling for a 46-42 deficit at halftime.

In the second half, the Raiders quietly put together a 12-point advantage at 65-53 with just over 13 minutes to play. Then CCC clamped down on defense, which fed their offense in rattling off a 23-3 run over the aforementioned seven-minute span. That run gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the game at 29 points and they coasted to the win.

Logan Fleming scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while Jerome Dixon finished with 19 points and nine assists. Marco Fabietti tallied 16 points, with Luke Cadzow right behind with 15 points. Ruben Fuamba and Bennett Nelson closed out the double-digit scoring with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

"This was the first time this season that we have had all the guys together and where we decided to play a 40-minute game," said Drymon. "I was real proud of our guys today."

With the win, the Raiders finish the 2016-17 regular season a mark of 17-13, while the loss gives the Storm an identical 17-13 final mark. CCC and SECC will meet in the first round of the Region IX tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Raider Fieldhouse.
