Women's Basketball: CCC Bounces Bears & Bulldogs

The Central Community College women's basketball team went 2-0 in the Bank of the Valley Classic at the Raider Fieldhouse on Thursday and Friday. A recap of both games is below. The 2-1 Raiders return to action on Tuesday at Northeast Community College. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.

CCC 58  McPherson College JV 41

The Raiders set the tone in the first quarter as they held the Bulldogs to five points. CCC built a 35-17 halftime lead on the strength of 62 percent field goal shooting in the second period. McPherson JV outscored the Raiders in the third quarter, 20-12, before the CCC defense clamped down in the fourth quarter and limited the Bulldogs to four points to take the win, 58-41.

"I thought we really controlled the game from the tip," said CCC head coach Kasi Stolz. "Holding them to 17 points in the first half was great. We got a little sloppy in the second half, but we were able to rebound and get enough stops to build the lead back up."

Madisen Jelinek and Amy Mitchell each logged double-doubles. Jelinek scored 20 points and hauled in 14 rebounds while Mitchell totaled 11 points and 10 boards.

CCC 68  Des Moines Area Community College 65

The Raiders engineered a come-from behind win over the Bears after falling behind 46-30 at halftime. CCC held DMACC to nine points in the third quarter and trailed 55-51 at the end of the period. The Raiders finally took the lead, 63-62, with 2:35 remaining on Nikie Nelson's driving layup. CCC then held the Bears scoreless over the final 43.6 seconds to hold on for the 68-65 victory.

"I thought we really battled against a very good team," said Stolz. "After being down at halftime by 16, we came out the second half in a zone defense and the kids really responded and created turnovers."

Mitchell led three CCC players in double figures with 22 points. Jelinek scored 13 points while Makenna Pelster finished with 10 points.
