Women’s Basketball: Raiders-Thunderbirds Preview

The Central Community College women's basketball team, winners of the Region IX championship, will take on United Tribes Technical College in the NJCAA Division II Basketball North Plains District Championship. The game is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 7, at the James Henry Gymnasium on the UTTC campus. A livestream of the game will be available at https://www.facebook.com/uttcbasketball/.

The Raiders are 14-13 following a 63-61 win over Southeast Community College in last Saturday's Region IX Tournament match at Raider Fieldhouse. A Lady Storm turnover with 18 seconds sealed the CCC victory. The Raiders have won three consecutive games.

The Raiders are led by Monica Brooks, who is averaging 16 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. Isabel Diaz averages 11.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per contest. Jasmine Williams, who led CCC with 22 points in the Region IX title game, is averaging 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing.

"I am very proud of our team and what we have accomplished," said CCC head coach Billy Perkins, who was named as Region IX Coach of the Year. "They have worked hard all season long and the Southeast game really showed that they believe in each other.  This team is very special."

The UTTC Thunderbirds are 12-17 following a 76-60 win at Gogebic Community College in the Region XIII Tournament championship game on Sunday. UTTC took control of the contest by outscoring Gogebic, 26-8, in the second quarter. The win gave the Thunderbirds their second consecutive Region XIII title.

The Thunderbirds are led by Karissa DuShane with 13.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Hannah Golus, who led UTTC with 23 points in the region championship game, averages 12.1 and seven rebounds per match. Kierra Johnson averages 10.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

"The Thunderbirds are going to be a good challenge, because they play really fast and have some really good basketball players," said Perkins. "They have a good inside game and shoot the three pointers well. We must slow them down and be fundamentally solid to have a chance to win."

The winner of the North Plains District Championship will advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Port Huron, Mich., March 17-21.
