The Central Community College golf team went down to Kansas over the weekend to compete in the Bethel College Spring Invitational at Hesston Golf Park on Saturday and Sand Creek Station on Sunday. A recap of the tournament is to follow:
The conditions on day 1 were very difficult with 30-35 MPH winds and a "feel" of 33 degrees. We saw Raiders put their heads down and grind out rounds of 75 for Jude Elgert, 80 for Spencer Knispel, 85 for Colby Sorensen, 82 for Tristan Zwiener, and 92 for Jack Edwards. Elgert was able to position himself at T-5th place and the team sat in 7th after the day 1 round.
Day 2 saw a chilly start with wind picking up towards the end of the round. The difficult Sand Creek Station was in immaculate condition, and boasts a 76 slope rating. Elgert fired a 78 giving him his first top 10 finish of his career (10th place), Knispel with a 77 (19th place finish), Zwiener with a 81, Sorensen with a 84 and Edwards with a 78. The Raider golf team finished in 7th place out of 11 teams.
Head coach Sam Elgert says, "I am extremely proud of the guys' drive and grit this weekend. The conditions on Saturday were close to unplayable and the guys put their heads down and competed. Sunday was a learning curve trying to figure out that course a bit, but once we got our feet under us we could score well. I am proud of my only sophomore to go, Jude Elgert, showing the freshman how to compete and grind out good scores on tough courses with bad weather."
