Men's Basketball: Merwick Recognized Nationally

Central Community College sophomore Derek Merwick has been named as the National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Division II Basketball Player of the Week.

During the week of Feb. 20 – Feb. 26, Merwick scored 48 points, pulled down 12 rebounds, dished out 10 assists and went 20-29 from the floor. In CCC's home game against McCook Community College, he scored a career-high 34 points.

"Derek has been playing at a very high level lately and he is a big reason why our team had success late in the season," said CCC head coach John Ritzdorf. "Derek works incredibly hard and is very deserving of this recognition from the NJCAA."

The Raiders closed out the 2022-23 regular season with a mark of 20-9 and will battle Southeast Community College in the Region 9 championship on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Beatrice.
