The Central Community College volleyball team went 1-3 at the Johnson County Community College Challenge in Overland Park, Kan. A brief recap of each match is below. The Raiders are now 11-13 on the season and will travel to Southeast Community College on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.
Match 1 vs. Des Moines Area Community College
The Bears took the opening match over the Raiders, 3-1.
DMACC won the first set, 25-21, before CCC evened the match with a 25-22 victory in the second set. The Bears held off the Raiders in the third game, 25-22, and then finished off the match with a 25-21 triumph in the fourth game.
Jacie Laetsch logged 18 kills, while Rylee Kwapnioski dished out 41 assists. Maddie Davis posted a team-high 21 digs.
Match 2 vs. Fort Scott Community College
The Raiders defeated the Greyhounds, 3-1, in the day's second match.
CCC won the opening set, 25-21, while Fort Scott returned the favor in the second match, 25-12. CCC claimed the match with a 25-23 win in the third game and a 25-21 decision in the fourth.
Laetsch tallied 19 kills, while Kwapnioski handed out 47 assists and made 19 digs. Davis also matched the 19-dig feat.
Match 3 vs. Coffeyville Community College
The Red Ravens claimed a battle of CCCs with a 3-1 victory over the Raiders.
Coffeyville opened the match with a pair of wins, 25-17 and 25-20. The Raiders owned game three, 25-21. The Red Ravens posted a 25-20 victory in the fourth set to win the match.
Abbe Mancuso finished with 12 kills, while Kwapnioski recorded 33 assists. Laetsch was tops in digs with 11.
Match 4 vs. Johnson County Community College
The Raiders gave the host Cavaliers all they could handle before JCCC took a 3-2 victory.
JCCC won the opening set, 25-10, and CCC responded with a 25-17 win in the second set. The Cavaliers won the third game, 25-21, and the Raiders evened things up with a 25-23 victory in the fourth game. JCCC took the match with a 15-12 final in the decisive fifth set.
Macuso led the way in kills with 18, while Kwapnioski totaled 45 assists. Laetsch was tops in digs with 30.
"Overall, we competed well with some of the top division II teams in the nation over the weekend," said CCC head coach Mary Young. "We pushed the #1 JCCC Cavaliers into the fifth and deciding game and we were so close to pulling off a great upset. I am happy with the progress I'm seeing in our team. Going into the month of October, it's important for us to continue to work on consistent play over long periods of time."
