Volleyball: Raiders Split at Kirkwood Invitational

The Central Community College Volleyball team won two matches and lost two matches at the Kirkwood Invitational in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, over the weekend. A recap of each match is below. The Raiders return home for a Wednesday night match with Northeast Community College at 7 p.m.

Match 1: vs. Parkland

The Cobras demonstrated why they are the top-ranked team and the defending national champion as they defeated the Raiders, 3-1. Parkland took the opening sets, 25-20 and 25-17, before CCC took the third set, 25-12. The Cobras won the match in the fourth set, 25-16.

Keisha Ellwanger led the Raiders in kills with 11, while Riley Dorn totaled 30 assists. Sydney Yong and Maeghan Pieper each tallied 17 digs. Laura Gross led the Cobras with 14 kills, while Jaime Johnson delivered 41 assists. Taylor Bauer finished with 19 digs.

Match 2: vs. McHenry

The Raiders bounced back with a 3-0 win over the Scots, 25-11, 25-23 and 25-19.

Ellwanger had 15 kills, Dorn totaled 32 assists and Kit Wells compiled 18 digs. Kayli Trausch let the Scots with 11 kills, while Payton Traff was tops in assists with 23. Sarah Adams added 18 digs.

Match 3: vs. Illinois Central

CCC opened day two of the Kirkwood Invitational with a 3-1 win over Illinois Central. The Cougars took the first set, 25-22, followed by the Raiders taking the next three, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-22.

Ellwanger picked up right where she left off, amassing 16 kills. Dorn led the Raiders in assists with 40, while Wells finished 21 digs.

Match 4: vs. Cowley County

The Raiders forced a decisive fifth set before the 16th-ranked Tigers won a fierce match, 3-2. Cowley County took first two sets, 25-23 and 25-17, before CCC stormed back in third and fourth sets, 25-23 and 25-23. The Tigers pulled away in the fifth set, 15-11.

For the Raiders, Ellwanger registered 16 kills, Dorn delivered 43 assists and Yong totaled 22 digs. Olivia Powell led the Tigers in kills with 25, Sydney Meget added 41 assists and Teryn Scott was tops in digs with 38.
