Volleyball: Raiders Sweep the Indians

Central Community College battled back from a six-point deficit in the third set to hold off a tough McCook squad en route to a 3-0 home victory. With the win, the Raiders improve to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Indians drop to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in league play.

In the opening set, the Raiders made it look easy as they won 25-15 on the strength of Keisha Ellwanger's five kills in the set and plays that left McCook confused and mistake-prone according to CCC head Coach Mary Young. The Indians put the pressure on in both the second and third sets before falling 25-22 and 25-23, respectively.

"In the second and third set, I felt like we let off the gas a little and waited for McCook to make mistakes rather than attacking them," said Young. "We struggled from the service line in those sets, missing serves to break our momentum and allow McCook to hang around. I was particularly proud of our resolve and poise late in the third set to tie it up and eventually push through for the win."

In kills, CCC was led by Chainey Tompkin with nine, followed by Ellwanger with eight and Maeghan Pieper with seven. Riley Dorn totaled 33 assists on the night, while Sydney Yong and Pieper each finished with 13 digs.

CCC will take part in the Northeast Tournament this weekend in Norfork. On Friday, the Raiders will meet Iowa Lakes CC and Fort Scott CC at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, CCC will take on Marshalltown CC at 1 p.m. and North Dakota State College of Science at 3 p.m.
