COLUMBUS -- It wasn't the prettiest win in the eyes of head coach Mary Young, but it was certainly a win.

The Central Community College volleyball team beat Southeast Community College 25-8, 17-25, 25-21, 25-15 Friday at the Raider Fieldhouse.

"It's good to go into the weekend with a win," Young said. "We need a break. We've went the last two weekends, but we'll have this weekend off. So it's good they go into the weekend with the win, especially with the long weekend. I don't think we were real sharp.

"It might not have been the prettiest win, but it was a win. We turned some things around and played with some energy to get the win."

The Raiders scored the final 11 points of the first set for the 25-8 win. Southeast had 12 unforced errors in the set.

"Southeast had a lot of errors in Set 1," Young said. "That score was pretty deceiving -- 25-8. Their errors kept us in that (set)."

Southeast scored 18 of the first 24 points in the second set, and held on for a 25-17 set win.

"Set 2, we just had far too many errors and just couldn't get it going passing-wise," Young said.

"We passed probably the worst we've passed all year," she added. "We've played 12 matches in a short amount of time and I think we have some athletes that may be a little tired. It's a good time for us to have a break."

Central, though, took the final two sets, 25-21 and 25-15, to win the match.

"In the third and fourth sets, we were just trying to regain that energy," Young said. "I told them that they have to be two points better. We've lost a couple heartbreakers by two points, so we didn't want that to happen again. I was happy about how we came out in the third and fourth."

Two of Central's most dangerous hitters struggled tonight, Young explained.

"Two of our bigger hitters struggled tonight," she said. "Morgan (Nikkila) struggled and Payton (Chohon) struggled. We couldn't get a good hand on the ball and just, the timing, we really struggled. We had good looks. We had good sets. Some nights are like that, but you hope it's not both of them at the same time. I'm proud of our other players because we played above it."

In addition to Nikkila's seven kills and Chohon's five kills, Emma Coenen had a team-high nine kills, while Hillary Thege added six kills.

Keely Woods had three blocks, while Alyssa Thege, Chohon and Riley Dorn each had two aces. Dorn also had a match-high 18 set assists.

Former Lakeview standouts Mikayla Hoefelman and Abbey Humlicek suited up for Southeast. Hoefelman had three kills and a block, while Humlicek recorded an ace serve.

Central hosts the Midland JV Wednesday.
