For the second straight year, the Columbus Telegram/Central Community College All-Star volleyball match went five sets, but unlike last year, the Silver team won the match.

The Silver team took the first, third and fifth sets in the 25th playing of the all-star match Thursday at the Raider Fieldhouse on the campus of Central Community College.

Kinsey Kozisek of David City Aquinas sent home the match-clinching kill in the fifth set to give the Silver team the 16-14 set win, holding off a Green rally.

"It was just an awesome game and I love that it went five sets," Silver team head coach Joan Caraway said. "Both teams played really well. I think there isn't one person in this group that won that game for us. They are a bunch of all-stars."

Caraway said she was honored to coach the Silver team.

"I feel lucky to get to coach so many good girls," she said. "In this area, we have a lot of talent and it was a pleasure to get to see them all come together and play together."

Libero Abbey Humlicek of Lakeview was named the Silver team Most Valuable Player for her key defensive efforts.

Caraway touted Humlicek's effort in the 27-25 third-set victory, as well as Kozisek, who finished with 12 kills, a block and an ace.

"There was a lot of good players, but Abbey in that third set, she served us back," she said. "As well as digging, she did a lot of good digging for us, so I really think she deserved it. Kinsey also hit really well. That's what shows up in the stats, that's what people see and she did a great job, but without Abbey's defense, we would have struggled."

Also producing for the Silver team was Katie Benner of North Bend, who had 12 killls, two blocks and two aces. Amber Mazankowski of Nebraska Christian had nine kills, six blocks and an ace.

With the Silver team leading two sets to one, the Green team scored the final five points of Set 5, to force a fifth.

Trailing 12-8 in the fifth set, Green battled back to tie it 14-all, but couldn't complete the comeback.

"It was a great game," Green head coach Emily Vanis said. "I thought they battled back and forth and played really well. It was a lot of fun."

The Green team MVP was Samantha Dirkschneider of North Bend, who led the game with 16 kills and a block.

"Sam Dirkschneider did a great job," Vanis said. "She was a leader, she stepped up, all the girls looked for her and she was a vocal leader. I thought she deserved the MVP award."

Holly Podliska of Humprhrey St. Francis had seven kills and two blocks for the Green team. Danielle Shenk of High Plains had five kills and two blocks, while Dana Pelster of Boone Central/Newman Grove had three kills and four blocks. Shelby-Rising City's Kylee Macken added three kills and three aces.

"It was just a great environment to be here with a bunch of girls that love volleyball and coach with coaches that love it," Vanis said. "It's just a lot of fun."
