Soccer: Raiders Handle The Hawks

The Central Community College Soccer team won its first game in the Dave Silva era with a 2-1 final over Northeast Community College on Tuesday. Ironically, sophomore Juan Alvarado, who played for Northeast last season, scored both goals for the Raiders.

Alvarado scored his first goal in the 20th minute of the contest when he was able to steal the ball after an NECC miscommunication on defense. Some eight minutes later, CCC freshman defender Mario Canela collided with the Hawks goalkeeper, which resulted in a red card and the Raiders had to play the remainder of the game one player down. Northeast evened the score in the 37th minute when Sebastian Delfin Besores found the back of the net. Both teams were unable to score for rest of the first half and the score was tied at 1-1 at halftime. Silva and his team spent the break talking about the best way to play being down one player.

"During the second half, our strategy was to play counter-attack since we knew they were going to attack us having that extra man," said Silva.

The revamped strategy worked as Alvarado scored with about two minutes remaining on a breakaway run. The Hawks were unable to match the late score and the Raiders were able to secure the 2-1 victory.

"It was a good win for us, especially if you consider that NECC played with an extra player for almost 60 minutes," said Silva.

Goal tending also played a key role in the win as Northeast outshot CCC, 15-7.

Up next, the Raiders will host Laramie County Community College on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
