COLUMBUS-- Edson Irineo's hat trick pushed the Raiders past the Broncos in their season-opener.The Central Community College men's soccer team defeated the Hastings JV 3-1 Tuesday at Wilderness Park.

"I'm kind of disappointed actually," Central head coach Jon Brezenski said of Central's preformance. "I didn't think we played the way we needed to play. We resorted to some bad habits that we're trying to break. We got lazy at times. We did some good things -- obviously it's good to get the win, but I thought we could play better."

The Broncos got on the board first when Trent Boyer found the back of the net in the 22nd minute.

About 10 minutes later, the Broncos kicked a lazy pass to the goal keeper, and Irineo beat him to the ball and kicked in his first goal of the game.

Then, in the 36th minute, Central's Rudy Escobar found Irineo for his second goal to put the Raiders ahead for the first time, 2-1.

"We just played our game," Brezenski said. "We started out great, then we had about a 10 minute spell where we didn't play real well and they scored. I gotta give the boys credit -- they settled back in and got the two goals before the half, which gave us the lead before the half -- that was big."

At the half, Brezenski told his team to play to its strengths.

"We needed to simplify things, move the ball around a little quicker," he said. "We were trying to do too many big switches, which we're not really a great team at doing that. We're better just linking the ball up and getting it through. That's what we wanted to do in the second half, but I don't think we did it as much as we should have."

At the 50:05 mark, Jose Jacobo found Irineo for his third goal to put the Raiders up 3-1.

"He's a great finisher, great player for us," Brezenski said of Irineo. "We can move him up, move him back and he got three nice finishes for us, which we definitely needed today. He's fun to watch."

With the win, the Raiders start the season 1-0, but Brezenski noted that there is work to be done going forward.

"I thought the effort was there for the most part," he said. "We had guys that were trying hard that we needed to try hard. Things we needed to work on -- working the ball out of the back and just decisions with the ball. Those have to get better."

Central had 16 shots on goal, compared to the Hastings JV's 10 and Central's keeper Esteban Curiel recorded six saves in the win.
