COLUMBUS -- After four straight losses, the Raiders earned their way back in the win column.

The Central Community College men's basketball team defeated the Doane College JV 85-71 Sunday at the Raider Fieldhouse.

"We persevered when we were challenged," Central head coach Jerry Drymon said. "We did a good job responding and building a lead out of that. Sometimes it's tough when you're challenged to respond back. I thought we did a good job of responding to the challenge. I think that's what we have to learn to do on a consistent basis."

After the Raiders built up a 22-18 lead early in the first half, Central closed the half with a 23-14 run to own a 45-32 halftime lead.

"In the first half, we were aggressive," Drymon said. "We attacked the basket. We shot 40 free throws in the game because of that aggressiveness. That was the key for us. We talked about that before the game. The first time we beat them, we were successful attacking the basket. Last time (in the loss), we settled for jump shots."

Doane started the second half on a 9-3 run to cut the Central lead to seven points and eventually tied the game at 58-all.

Central then rattled off a 7-0 run for a lead it wouldn't lose.

"We did a couple things well. We inbounded quickly and got a couple transition layups," Drymon said. "Sometimes, the best time to score is after somebody else scores. We showed patience for the most part. We didn't go into panic mode when we missed a bad shot. We ran offense and worked for a good shot."

In total, the Raiders outscored Doane 40-39 in the second half.

"I anticipated them coming back," Drymon said. "They made some good shots. Matt McLeod had a great game rebounding the ball, Shawn (Robinson) scored some points, but I think defensively, we did a much better job when it mattered down the stretch in the second half."

Central went to the charity stripe 40 times, while Doane made the trip just 10 times in the game.

Shawn Robinson's 29 points led the way for the Raiders.

"He was aggressive going at the basket," Drymon said. "He didn't settle for jump shots. He got to the free-throw line 15 times, which is what we need out of him -- to be aggressive."

Thomas Johnson scored 18 points, while McLeod added 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Central hosts Southeast Community College Wednesday.
